Course: Leadership in the Caribbean

Rationale:
The aim of this course is engage students in a critical analysis some of the different leaders in the Caribbean both and present. We will be particularly looking at leaders such as Fidel Castro of Cuba, Alexander Bustamante of Jamaica, Grantley Adams of Barbados and Eric Williams of Trinidad. We will look at important terms like Democracy, Marxism, Socialism, and Capitalism. Exactly what role of if any did they play in the lives of the leaders discussed and their people. It is by examining these men personally and their actions and what they went through. We can hopefully gain a better understanding of what it meant to be a leader then and may be now.

Instructional Goals
• At the end of each session students should gain a better understanding and respect as it regards some of the leaders in the Caribbean either in the past such as Fidel Castro and many others.
• Understand or know certain terms and ideologies like Marxism or Capitalism and how these relate to leadership in the Caribbean now or in the past.
• How each leader in the discussion went about affecting change or trying to govern their populace given the circumstances they were presented.
Specific Objectives
• The students should at least be able identify one leader and what type of leadership style they employed and how it helped or hurt in achieving their goals.
• Understand at least one of the terms such as Capitalism or Marxism and know why each is important as well as what kind of role each had as it regards to leadership in the Caribbean either now or then.
• Know about the problems that each leader faced and how they overcame them or failed to.

Course Content
Unit 1 – Definitions and Fidel Castro
a. Definitions of terms such as Capitalism, Marxism, Socialism and Democracy
b. Examining who Fidel Castro was before and after he came to power in Cuba?
c. The things that made Castro such a through strong and sometimes feared leader in Cuba such as he went through and did?
d. Looking at his trials and tribulations as well as his victories and losses?
e. We will also look at his famous speech ‘History will absolve me’?
Activities:
Read the materials provided.
Participate in the discussion on Facebook for a half an hour. Your participation is worth (5%) of your final grade. Answering the question is worth (5%) as well.
Write a 3 to 4 page paper in which you specify: Discuss all that you learned about Fidel Castro and his revolution whether by way of text provided or through your own research?

Unit 2 – Dr. Eric Williams
a. Investigating who Eric Williams was before a before and after he came to power whether the good or the bad?
b. What were the things that made him a strong and well respected leader in Trinidad & Tobago and in the Caribbean for so long?
c. The times he succeeded and times he did not accomplish anything?

Read the materials provided.
Participate in the discussion on Facebook for a half an hour. Your participation is worth (5%) of your final grade. Answering the question is worth (5%) as well.
Write a 3 to 4 page paper in which you specify: Discuss all that you learned about Eric Williams by way of text provided or through your own research? (10%)
Start compiling credible sources for an 8 to 10 essay is due July 5, 1015. The essay itself is worth (30%) percent of your final grade so if you want help with anything regarding this essay or the course in general contact your teacher. Discuss the topic you want to write about with your instructor and make sure it is in keeping with the topic and theme of Leadership in the Caribbean.

Unit 3 – Sir Grantley Adams
a. Who exactly was Grantley Adams including what he did before and after he rose to prominence and what made famous or notorious?
b. What made him a good and esteemed leader in Barbados and in the Caribbean as a whole?
c. What were his accomplishments and his failures if any?
Activities:
Read the materials provided.

Write a 3 to 4 page paper in which you specify: Discuss all that you learned about Grantley Adams by way of text provided or through your own research?

Unit 4 – Sir William Alexander Bustamante
a. Sir William Alexander Bustamante the man including what he did growing up and the stuff he did after becoming leader in Jamaica?
b. The things that made him a capable and honored leader in Jamaica and to a degree in the Caribbean as well?
c. The good things that he did and what were some of his disappointments?
Activities:
Read the materials provided.
Participate in the discussion on Facebook for a half an hour. Your participation is worth (5%) of your final grade. Answering the question is worth (5%) as well.
Write a 3 to 4 page paper in which you specify: Discuss all that you learned about Grantley Adams by way of text provided or through your own research?
Remember the 8 to 10 page essay is due the July 5, 2015. It is worth (30%) percent of your final grade.

Class Attendance
This is a high school course but please attend the Facebook discussions that every Tuesday of every week once the course starts. The times for those discussions will determined later on. It will be a time hopefully where everyone can attend and participate to earn some easy grades and better your understanding of the course. One thing is for certain it will be in the afternoon and not in the morning. Please look out for more information as the course progresses.

Though the graded work posted in the Facebook group is not worth in the long run. I still want to see people their ready to discuss and share their thoughts on things relating to the course. You can use the Facebook group to get your voice and or queries heard and responded to as well. If you do not have a facebook account already.
